Cafe Operative-Food preparation and customer service

The Glendale Trust is looking to recruit a Cafe Operative to work at Borrodale School, Glendale from the above dates.

The person should be capable of working on their own initiative in a busy environment.    Hours worked will be 10 am to 4 pm, Monday to Saturday.

Job sharing is a possibility.

This is an exciting opportunity for the community to secure ownership of the facilities at Meanish for the benefit of locals and visitors.

Once completion of the formalities has taken place the trust intends to consult with the local community, in particular through an open public meeting to consider how this resource should best be maintained and managed for the benefit of Glendale. At the same time the trust intends to work closely with the Moorings Association to protect the interests of the association and its members in using the facilities at Meanish.

This has proved to be a very popular event over the previous years and as always there will be music, dancing, bonfire and a barbecue.

We will be hosting third annual “Come home to Glendale weekend” on the weekend of 19-22nd July.

This will create an opportunity for the Glendale Diaspora to return home to meet with family and friends, swap stories and celebrate Glendale Life. It is also an opportunity for those who have any connection with Glendale to celebrate life here in this corner of Skye and share in our cultural heritage. This event will certainly appeal to locals and tourists alike.

The come home activities will commence with a Gaelic service at The Free Church in Glendale on Thursday 21^st July when Rev. Kenny Macdonald will “return home” to  lead the service.

Our Friday activities will allow those coming to the event to see the Glendale heritage exhibition as well as seeing material held by the Highland Archive centre in Portree when they will bring along archives that they are custodian for that are relevant to Glendale.

There will be a fishing competition off the rocks in the afternoon which will be followed by the annual Glendale lecture. We are delighted that Prof. Norman Macdonald will give the lecture this year on the life of the Glendale bard, Neil Macleod and his works.

We will have a traditional Gaelic ceilidh evening on the Friday evening.

The Saturday will consist of various activities, including a walk in the morning, the annual Glendale vs. the rest of the world football match. Glendale looks forward to winning back the Glendale Cup which was “narrowly” lost in penalties before a large crowd last year! The day will culminate with a ceilidh in The Glendale Hall where we will be entertained by the Ardmore ceilidh band.

Our homecoming weekend will be brought to a close on Sunday when all are invited to attend an inter-denominational service at The Glendale Free Church at 11am with the service to be led by the Rev Neil Maclean.

This year’s line up is arguably the best we have had with many accomplished performers taking part in this year’s event. What also makes the event unique to Glendale is that as well as honouring Robert Burns, we will play tribute to our own local bard, Neil Macleod giving a particular local slant to the evening.

Allan Campbell who hails from Colbost and is well known as a broadcaster and journalist will chair proceedings. Prof Norman Macdonald, ex of the BBC will introduce the works of Neil MacLeod and we are delighted to be joined by the Gaelic singer, Arthur Cormack who will sing the songs of MacLeod.

The traditional burns supper speeches and recitals will be given by John Bennett, Ian Blackford, Brian Smith, Norman Beaton, Mairi Sine Chaimbeul and Angus Thorburn.

As well as delivering the reply on behalf of the lassies, Mairi Sine, who is an ex Mod Gold medallist will also sing accompanied by her sister Catherine together with her husband Norman Will on fiddle.

This is sure to be an excellent evening. Just over 20 tickets remain on sale so booking is advisable to participate in the evening. Tickets can be obtained from the Glendale post office or from Ian Blackford on 01470 511218.

 Unfortunately the strength of the wind and concern over participant’s safety left us with no option but to cancel.
